ABSTRACT

In the Western Soudan, the French Army, as we have seen, was inspired by independent and adventurous officers who paid scant attention to civilians in Dakar or Paris. Given their isolation, they often initiated military campaigns against indigenous populations without government authorization, boldly presenting their fait accomplis to civilians in Dakar and Paris. In this way, the French occupied much of the Western Soudan between 1890 and 1900.
