ABSTRACT

A year after taking the course that motivated me to write this paper, a student offered the following reflection on both her learning and her resistance to learning:

It is very difficult to be a witness to your own life, to suddenly begin learning the subtle yet unmistakable ways in which a woman's life is guided by expectations, evaluations, and in many cases a lack of encouragement. These are factors that many of us, for a variety of reasons (usually the fear of truth and reality), choose to ignore. 1
