ABSTRACT

I propose that women do less harm only because we have less

power.1 Once we gain power, it becomes clear that we are as inept in

eccentricities or foibles. Weaknesses and flaws in character, when

expressed between friends and family, may be annoying (avoiding

to other people) but they are rarely politically destructive. Once an

individual gains power, however, once a group gains power, the

ginalized to abuse power emerges when we gain power either by

becoming insiders in a formerly criticized institution, or as our move-

ments for social change gain in numbers and political influence. I con-

which there is a clear division between good and evil, truth and error,

order and chaos, purity and corruption, commitment to the greater

good and mere self-aggrandizement, then we are likely to be shattered

and resistant to criticism when others see it in us.
