ABSTRACT
To comprehend the global diffusion of the new forms of Christian fundamentalism it is necessary to understand the forces that generate the faith and its accompanying theology within the United States. Among the many strengths of the belief system, something we will call “fundamentalist Americanism” stands out: the belief peculiar to U.S. Christianity that simultaneously sanctifies American nationalism and the American gospel of success, wealth, and prosperity.
