ABSTRACT

In an Indian village on the shores of Lake Atitlan, beneath the towering volcanos that dominate the horizon of Guatemala, five young women in traditional, multicolored skirts and blouses are invoking a religious chant with powerful gestures and loud voices. The listener who does not understand their language might first suspect that this is an ancient indigenous rite, but then would notice that the women are all waving Bibles rhythmically with their right hands. They are street evangelists, intent on spreading the Word of Jesus and saving the souls of their neighbors.
