ABSTRACT

THE FIRST PATHWAY I HAD CHOSEN into CAD/CAM technology for this project was to follow undergraduate students through their learning experiences with the technology. The dominant image of technology outside society provides for a special breed of person who produces and controls technology. The ideal type is the inventor who departs from human society to become the creative genius behind the technological force of progress. Today the figure of design engineer most closely approximates this ideal. I was interested in how prospective design engineers might move into positions of control over CAD/CAM technology, and was surprised at the extent to which such movement involved simultaneous acts of submission.
