ABSTRACT
There are very good reasons to see Oscar Wilde’s Ideal Husband at the Ethel Barrymore Theater on Broadway, and one of them is Oscar Wilde. My astounding revelation will not, perhaps, make headline news around the world. It is, after all, quite well known that Wilde is witty, and no one appreciated his wit more than Wilde. At the same time, Peter Hall’s confident London production of the 1895 comedy makes clear that Wilde isn’t as seriously flippant as he may seem.
