ABSTRACT

The idea of global citizenship or world citizenship - I shall use the phrases interchangeably-is remarkably controversial. Many claim that we are at least in the early twenty-first century world citizens, whilst others dismiss the idea as absurd. One way of seeing why such different positions on whether we are global citizens can be taken up is to address the issue via a series of further, more specific, contradictory statements and examine the reasons which might be given for each statement. At the very least this will reveal how complex the field is. In each case I offer a further critical comment which is sometimes a resolution of the opposition, sometimes support for one position but with recognition of important points made on the other side.
