ABSTRACT
Yet surprised as we might be to find a particular item on offer, the uncertainty, the ambivalence, the mixture of feelings felt at that moment are familiar enough. Commodification domesticates the exotic and estranges the commonplace; it promises the democratization and diffusion of goods, services, and experiences even as it threatens their standardization and devaluation, perhaps even their profanation. The terms themselves grate on our ear: commodification, standardization, devaluation. To trot out these catchwords in their full Latinate dress is to evoke the complex estrangements that haunt the otherwise innocent and unreflective gesture of pointing to something and asking: "This is for sale?"
