ABSTRACT

In this chapter I entertain the hypothesis put forth in certain previous theories, that there is only one parse P to which phonological rules may refer, and show that this hypothesis falls short in explaining the data. I apply four current theories of Phonological Domain Generators (PDGs) to data from Chimwi:ni, a Bantu language spoken in Somalia, and to data from Chicheŵa, a Bantu language spoken in Malawi. I conclude that even if we assume that P is unique, we cannot predict the domains in these languages. I conclude that one reason these theories fall short is that P is not unique, as suggested by the data introduced in chapter 2.
