ABSTRACT

Tableau (14) shows that underlying short vowels do not lengthen in polysyllables. A non-moraic consonant in the input will surface as a non-moraic onset straightforwardly. Without a dominant coercive moraic markedness constraint to force a vowel to lengthen, either the general moraic markedness constraint or the faithfulness constraint against adding morae to underlyingly short vowels prevent lengthening.
