ABSTRACT

21 October 1967: Tens of thousands of anti-Vietnam War demonstrators converge on the Pentagon in Washington DC. Co-organiser Abbie Hoffman has applied for a permit to levitate the Pentagon some go metres in the air. If it levitates, Hoffman says, it will be exorcised, evil will be cast out, and the war will end. The Pentagon's General Services Administrator haggles him down to 3 metres and grants the permit. The Pentagon has left nothing to chance, with troops committed in the city for the first time since 1932, and the 82nd Airborne Division on standby just outside the capital. A total of 8300 military personnel are deployed. Just in case. 1
