ABSTRACT

Andrew Hill is more critical of the younger players who have followed the Wynton Marsalis direction in looking back into the tradition. Hill also sees, further recording possibilities for the group, especially since his move from Blue Note to the independent Palmetto label, where he has forged a creative partnership with producer Matt Balitsaris. Hill thinks that there won't be too many more one-off appearances like his recent South Bank concert, but he was genuinely elated about his Duets on the Hudson event with Bobby Hutcherson. For hill, Denys Baptiste, Jason Yarde and Byron Wallen players have the same intensity and creativity that Hill groups had in the sixties. Hill won the Danish Jazzpar prize, so for the six months leading up to the April 2003 award ceremony he was writing the music for the Copenhagen presentation, some of which will be played on his British tour.
