ABSTRACT

A double winner at the BBC Jazz Awards, with prizes in both 2002 and 2003, Brian Kellock has put himself on the map as one of the UK's leading pianists. The most lively and innovative place in the British jazz scene at present is Edinburgh. Bands such as drummer John Rae's Celtic Feet combine the sounds of jazz piano and saxophone with the traditional fiddle playing of Eilidh Shaw and the concertina of Simon Thoumire. Equally, saxophonist Tommy Smith's projects have included musical interpretations of the work of the Scottish poet Edwin Morgan, such as Beasts Of Scotland, and Tommy has also been the guiding light behind the Scottish National Jazz Orchestra, which is now one of Britain's leading big bands. Brian has never followed his fellow Scots pianists Dave Newton, Paul Harrison and Steve Hamilton to a career south of the border.
