ABSTRACT

Horace moves from Norwalk to Hartford, become known through his work with Stan Getz, and made his first discs. The trio records had come about as a result of Horace's friendship with altoist Lou Donaldson, who had introduced him to Blue Note. They had met while Horace was living in the Bronx, through a mutual friend, Arthur Woods, a great jazz fan and also an amateur musician who tried to play alto, but whose main work was in a film distribution company. At that point Lion was obliged to hire Byrd for Horace's discs, even though Farmer was still working on some of the live gigs. Because of finances it wasn't possible to work with a big band, and we liked the smaller setting because we could all blow more. Also, a quintet was financially feasible. Horace had a similarly close relationship with Alfred Lion as he had to the other musicians in the band.
