ABSTRACT

Centralised heating is where a central heat source serves a building via a distributed medium. In determining the type of heating to be installed in a given building, there are three main decisions to be made if installation and running costs are to be minimised. In tall buildings, poorly insulated structures or areas having high ventilation rates, radiant heating is usually more effective and cheaper to operate than convective systems. Smaller, heavy weight buildings, well insulated and with little or no forced ventilation may be more suited to convective heating. Direct fired convective heating is achieved by burning gas in a controlled flow of air and passing the heated air together with the products of combustion directly into the building to be heated. Like gas fires, conventionally flued natural convector heaters are normally to be found in domestic or small commercial premises, input ratings range from 7.5 to 14.5 kW.
