ABSTRACT
For several decades Britain's major towns and cities have been struggling with the challenges of urban regeneration brought on by the decline of traditional industry. The closure of docks, factories and warehouses as a result of technological change and manufacturing contraction has created some exceptional opportunities for remaking cities and introducing new uses. However, it has also left behind a legacy of physical, economic and social problems, which have often outstripped the capacity of local communities to adapt and respond.
