ABSTRACT

At the time of writing, recommendations for the use of preservatives and treated timber in the UK are contained within a range of British Standards. Other countries have their own standards, which frequently differ significantly from each other. The Single European Act of 1 July 1987 required that member states should enact their own national legislation, harmonized by 279 European Directives, by 31 December 1992. The eventual legislation adopted by the European Commission would then be derived by a majority vote.
