Good buildings don’t just happen. They are the outcome of a two-stage process:

The first stage is the brief. This is the process of analysing the clients’ requirements and all issues associated with those requirements and then laying them out clearly and comprehensively in the brief document. In the USA this stage is often called ‘programming’

The second stage is called design. This is a separate process, though the two stages may run partly in parallel. The design stage brings into play an accumulation of knowledge and experience, aimed at meeting the issues identified in the brief
