ABSTRACT

The process of making a building is a clearly defined sequence of analysis, assessment and then design, starting with ‘the big picture’ before gradually focusing upon the details. Part of the big picture, before agreeing the masterplan, is the analysis of feasible options. In practice the two stages will often overlap, with various outline designs being developed and tested for feasibility before a final version is firmed up to become the formal masterplan. This chapter and the next should therefore be read in this context.
