ABSTRACT

Environmentally responsible sports venues are unfortunately few and far between. But that is set to change, as Environmentally Sustainable Development (ESD) becomes an increasingly important factor in the design of all buildings. Indeed, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) are now insisting that sport-related facilities developed in their name are designed to show care and respect for the environment. This is not only in practical aspects such as the choice of materials, energy use and waste management, but also in terms of the buildings’ visual impact and its relationship with its environs, roads and other transport links. Other leading sports governing bodies, and certainly planning and funding bodies, are sure to follow the IOC’s lead.
