ABSTRACT

In the development of the campus there are clear differences between the use of masterplans and development frameworks. Potential developers, such as research partners and private institutions, can obtain through the master plan a picture of what they may be willing to buy or at least support. Development frameworks on the other hand are more flexible in format and can serve the objectives of securing ordered growth and attracting inward investment more effectively than the traditional master plan. A campus-wide development framework can be supported by formal master plans for specific areas, such as the academic centre, a student housing village, research park, and so on. Temasek has refined a repertoire of different kinds of teaching environment for each faculty, thereby giving the campus academic distinctiveness. In 1977 the Saudi authorities appointed a French construction group including the architects Andrault and Parat to prepare the master plan for the new Dammam campus.
