ABSTRACT

Where architects simply rely on conventional approaches to including handicraft in a building. they halt market erosion. They may not. though. help crafters to establish practices that are successful adaptations for contemporary demand. Rather. by only using details and materials that are conventional. the profession concentrates on a few accepted practices and allows many crafts skills to atrophy. This in turn causes the crafters to neglect overall versatility. However. some Japanese designers do mirror the traditional role of a connoisseur. by

creating new challenges to crafters in the context of on-going collaborations. Over time. and because of the work of these architects. some crafters have also come to target architects in their work.
