ABSTRACT
On 15 September 1975, shortly before sunset, the Australian flag was lowered for a last time in Port Moresby. Ninety years of white paternalism and colonial exploitation had come to an end. The next morning, the Bird of Paradise flag was ceremonially hoisted on Independence Hill; Papua New Guinea was an independent state within the Commonwealth.
