ABSTRACT

PNG makes its presence felt on Nauna through various institutions and persons. In 1988, the most flashy mark of this presence was perhaps a small UHF transceiver which the Provincial Government had installed in the school house. The school had Nauna's best roof, well-suited to support the solar cell which provided this equipment with electricity. The transceiver could be used for communication with the Provincial Government. During most of my stay it was however not functioning due to neglect and the salty climate. For the same reasons, other electronic equipment was rarely found on Nauna, either; of all the islanders, only two or three families had a transistor radio and could thus receive national and provincial radio programmes (though, they most often listened to Australian radio programmes).
