ABSTRACT
Today, Papua (the former British/Australian colony) plus Kaiser Wilhelmsland and New Guinea (the former German colony) are firmly united into the independent state of Papua New Guinea, while the old Dutch colony in the west of New Guinea has become an Indonesian province named Irian Jaya. The latter is separated from PNG by a troubled land border, about 730 kilometres long.
