ABSTRACT

This conlusion presents some closing thoughts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides the vitality of female costume within the boundaries of the Ottoman Empire. This naturally prompts inquiry into the survival of tradition especially in view of the constant pressure from mass-produced clothing manufactured in European styles. The book examines that professional and social roles have to be taken into account. Costumes have continued to develop along traditional lines and have even been revitalised by the introduction of foreign accessories and synthetic fabrics, to produce a situation of dynamic transition. While European garments and fabrics may continue to be adopted it is likely that traditional and modern fashions will continue to evolve and exist together. It is important that this sartorially interesting situation is recorded in sufficient detail that is often too sadly absent from the study of historical costume.
