ABSTRACT

The 1946 elections terminated the Unionist Party’s twenty year dominance of Punjabi politics. Khizr, however remained in office at the head of a Coalition Government with his erstwhile Akali and Congressite opponents. The Unionist tail, moreover wagged the Coalition dog, as although it was the smallest component of the Government, it alone could claim Muslim support. The Muslim League, nevertheless, denounced the Ministry as illegitimate and lacking in any moral authority.
