ABSTRACT

This work at its simplest is a record of a life. Like all biographical writing it has represented history in microcosm. It has filled in the fine detail on the broad brush approach of my earlier portrayals of the system of collaboration between the Punjabi landed elites and the British authorities. 1 To tell the story of any individual’s career, it is necessary, however, to describe the stage on which it is played out. Biographical subjects cannot be disembodied from their environments. This study has thus described both the social and economic background of the British Punjab, and the history of Khizr’s forbears.
