ABSTRACT

The Mall or thandi sarak as it was popularly known ran through the heart of the Punjab’s capital Lahore. Proceeding south westwards from the famous landmark of Queen Victoria’s statue at Charing Cross, one passed further symbols of the British ruling presence. Facing each other across the road were the immaculate English style gardens named after Sir John Lawrence and the imposing entrance to Government House. Just a few minutes walk away another impressive building came into view with its extravagant domes. This was the main building of Aitchison College. It had been founded in 1886 to educate the sons of Punjab Chiefs and landlords.
