ABSTRACT

Red Book became ubiquitous during the Cultural Revolution, when everyone learnt it by heart and daily study sessions were organized in work units to discuss it. Ownership of Quotations became obligatory and it was carried by all Red Guards. Quotations from Mao’s writings were included in and prefaced all articles and books published in that period. With Lin B iao’s mysterious death in 1971, following an alleged plot against Chairman Mao, the Little Red Book became something of an embarrassment.
