ABSTRACT

In Chapter 7.1, we made a comparison between the modem and the indigenous sugar industries of India, in order to evaluate their competitive edges in the domestic market as a result of respective technological improvements. However, since cane-sugar has been a world commodity from very early days, there are many comparable cases in other tropical and subtropical regions, and the technological level of the Indian sugar industry can be examined in comparison with those of other countries. The Japanese experience (including that of Taiwan under Japanese rule), for example, as well as those of Java, Mauritius and Cuba, may show some contrasts with the technological development of the Indian sugar industry. The aim of this chapter is to suggest that the technological level of the modem sugar industry in India was less advanced than its equivalents in other countries, whereas that of the indigenous sugar industry was quite similar to comparable industries in other countries.
