ABSTRACT

In the first week of March 1837 disaster overtook a portion of Klugenau’s command. That general with the troops in northern Daghestan had been placed by Baron Rosen at the disposal of General Fé sé, commanding the left flank of the Line, and the latter, in order to withdraw Shamil’s attention from his operations against Tchetchnia and Andee, had ordered Klugenau to make a demonstra tion in force without delay in whatever direction he con sidered best for the attainment of that object.
