ABSTRACT

The introduction of notation in medieval Armenian music was a major phenomenon. Admittedly, such notation could not have been created spontaneously, detached from the other phenomena of cultural life. New evidence gathered on the timing of the application of khazes carries even greater weight when viewed in the light of the logical connection between the origins and development of the system and the progression of medieval Armenian music. A side-by-side investigation of these related questions will enable us to explain in greater detail the various stages in the evolution of the system.
