ABSTRACT

The study of Armenian medieval music and research into the khaz system of notation have a long and distinguished history. A great deal has been written in the past and in recent years in which various scholars have analysed Armenian medieval music, in particular khazes, and have attempted to present their explanation. However minor their achievements in the way of assessing and explaining khazes, a reappraisal of their contributions is still essential before embarking on any new direction. The following presentation will concentrate therefore on the reassesment of the results of certain major studies with two basic objectives in mind. Firstly, to highlight any important points for later research, and secondly, to analyse any failings in their approach which, in many cases, have impeded the adoption of a correct analysis of the subject.
