ABSTRACT

Deciphering the Armenian khazes is one of the major problems for Armenian culture. The purpose of this survey of early Armenian notation is to articulate certain procedures and functional steps by which future research should be conducted. Among these procedures is the study of the system of Armenian musical notation in the context of its historical background. Such an approach provides the detailed analysis of the essential and continuous changes in the system brought about by specific situations and helps explain what these alterations were intended to achieve.
