ABSTRACT

The previous chapter concentrated on the landowners of the village. This chapter deals with the landless villagers. The latter do not constitute a homogeneous social class and one may distinguish between two categories of landless villagers, each with its specific social status. On the one hand, there are the people who have lost their land for a variety of reasons but who still consider themselves and are referred to as members of a landowner’s zat. On the other hand, there are the craftsmen who have never traditionally owned land.
