ABSTRACT

As a reward for his success in obtaining a doctorate degree for his thesis on Abu'l-'Alā', Ṭāhā Ḥusain won a scholarship to study in France, where he was to spend about five years, from November 1914 to October 1919. Before moving on to consider this final stage in Ṭāhā's formal education, it would be appropriate to look more closely at the earlier period of his education at the Egyptian University (1908–1914), with a view to ascertaining to what extent he was then already familiar with, and committed to, French modes of thought.
