ABSTRACT

James Long was born in Bandon in southern Ireland in 1814 – one year before the battle of Waterloo. He was the third child and eldest son of John and Anne Long who lived in the parish of Ballymodan, the young James being baptized at St. Peter’s Ballymodan on the 4th June 1814. 1 One of his two elder sisters Mary (three years older) was baptized at St. Peter’s in June 1811 and Catherine, who was 15 months his senior, in the same church in March 1813.
