ABSTRACT

When Long applied for service with the C.M.S. at the age of 24 he explained that he was ‘single’ and was ‘under no sort of engagement whatsoever’. 1 However, about twenty months later, after completing his studies at Islington but before sailing for Calcutta, marriage was on his mind. In a note to the Society’s clerical sub-committee he pointed to the absence of rules respecting marriage and asked if it were permissible for missionaries who went out single to return home after three years for the purpose of marriage. 2 The Committee replied that Long would be ‘at liberty’ to return home with a view to marriage after two or three years residence at his station, ‘should he desire to do so’.
