ABSTRACT

Country ships and country boats as well as vessels of the Bombay Marine were used for the transport of troops. When in 1799 Jehangir’s owner, Rustomjee Dorabjee Patel, hopefully tendered her for the Egypt expedition, she was turned down. Yet, he recalled, when in 1796 the Government had occasion for a well equipped ‘warlike ship’ the Jehangir was selected and went cruising to the Red Sea, to Diu and again in 1799 she ‘performed service’ under her present commander [William Sylvester] for sixteen months in the Red Sea at Aden, Perim, Mocha, Jedda and Suez at Rs. 13,000 p.m, war risk borne by Government. (She had lately been on a long voyage and needed examining and repair and would not be ready for 10 days. 93 ) Nemesis was to overcome her in 1810 when she was wrecked at the outset of the Mauritius campaign.
