ABSTRACT

I think you may attribute to the punishments in the island the present class of inhabitants that they have there. There is nothing more likely to make a man a rogue than to treat him as such, and that would be quite confirmed by what I have seen at Hong Kong. […] One instance occurred with a coolie of my own. I had arrived from Canton about four o’clock in the morning, and on going to my own house I found nobody outside. I found that my watchman had gone up to be registered the day before, and he had called me a ‘qui.’ The registrar asked him, ‘Do you mean to say that your master is a qui; a devil?’ and he repeated the word ‘qui,’ and was immediately sent to gaol and kept there for some days, and received 20 lashes on the bare back.
