ABSTRACT

On December 28, 1988, a new Jewish organization was established in New York, The International Coalition for the Revival of the Jews of Yemen (ICROJOY). The new organization was initiated by David Shucker, Dr. Hayim Tawil, Sir Moshe Barr-Nea, and Shlomo Garafi. Dr. Tawil, an Associate Professor at Yeshiva University in New York, served as the chairman of the organization. Dr. Pierre Goloubinoff, who had visited Yemen in September 1985 under the name Da’ud Hamamī, was instrumental in providing ICROJOY with significant information and guidance. Financially supported by the American Joint Distribution Committee (AJDC), this new framework managed to recruit to its service, on a voluntary basis, a wide spectrum of highly influential organizations and personalities, Jews and non-Jews alike. ICROJOY’s letterhead featured an Honorary Board which included Elie Wiesel and U.S. Senators Alfonse D’Amato and Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York, Dennis DeConcini of Arizona, and Robert Graham of Florida. It also included members of the House of Representatives: Benjamin Gilman, Mel Levine, James Scheuer, and Stephen Solarz. Thanks to the wide-ranging support which ICROJOY managed to mobilize, the Yemeni Jewish problem swung, far more than before, into the international and humanitarian limelight.
