ABSTRACT

Vilhelm had confided to Kirsten on 5 January that he wanted to leave the old family business Moses & Son, G. Melchior to go to China. A few days later he set about putting his plan into action. He presented himself to the head office of East Asiatic Company for more information about the possibility of working at the company's newly established branch in Shanghai. He was 23 years old, had already had several years of practical experience in various firms both in Denmark and abroad and was in possession of excellent references. At E.A.C. Vilhelm was told that there were no openings at present. From 1899 to 1908 the E.A.C. headquarters were located in the Copenhagen Free Port. It was here that Vilhelm was hired by E.A.C. in 1902 and later – in 1906 – entered into an agreement with H.N. Andersen for a loan to A. M. & Co. https://s3-euw1-ap-pe-df-pch-content-public-p.s3.eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/9781315028637/9576ae74-a4b5-4497-b28c-fb9fe2dfdca6/content/fig22_B.jpg" xmlns:xlink="https://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"/>
