ABSTRACT

Vilhelm arrived in Shanghai on 18 April 1902. Ivan Andersen, the E.A.C. book-keeper, was waiting on the wharf to welcome him. Andersen was somewhat older than Vilhelm and had already been in Shanghai for a year. The two young men were to work at the same office and although quite different in appearance, Andersen being plump and Meyer tall, the two got along well. Directly after his arrival, Vilhelm reported to the E.A.C. office to start his new job with Frederik Kinch, the managing director. The ship had been delayed for several days and Kinch blamed Vilhelm for the delay. Vilhelm was taken aback and annoyed as he had had no means of getting there any faster.
