ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the analysis of the development of electoral politics in provincial Thailand through an examination of Klang villagers' participation in national politics during the first half of the 1990s. The National Peace-Keeping Council (NPKC) justified its coup partly on the grounds that vote buying and influence peddling corrupted Thai democracy and general elections. It subsequently sponsored a programme aimed at eradicating corruption and vote buying in elections. Ministry of Interior officials responsible for implementing the campaign set up teams for comprising a teacher, public health official, villager and either a policeman or member of the military. The Ministry of Interior ordered Community Development Departments throughout the country to train women in the nature and bases of democracy and kamnan were requested to forward the names of three women to attend an event entitled: 'Training Women's Leaders in order to Promote Knowledge about Democracy'.
