ABSTRACT
A Lthough It Was not apparent at the time, the last decade of the L. eighteenth century saw the end of a way of life founded on customs, traditions and the concepts of monarchy that went back to the times of Chao Fa Ngum. In European terms, the transition was comparable to that experienced when the Tudor and Caroline Ages slowly and painfully developed into the beginnings of modern Europe.
