ABSTRACT

Thirty-seven-year-old Amir operates a small enterprise producing gold jewellery. He was born in a kampung (village) north of Makassar city, Sulawesi, to which he moved in 1987, and is married with four children. There are 14 people living with him, in his city home, including his immediate and extended family who work for him, as well as those employed by his wife, a tailor. He has been a goldsmith for 13 years, and makes rings, bracelets and necklaces, the skills for which his father taught him.
