ABSTRACT
From the critique of small enterprise research presented in Chapter 2 it becomes clear that, in its entirety, flexible specialisation should not be used as an approach with which to examine such enterprises in developing countries. Yet there does not appear to be an alternative paradigm or theoretical approach robust enough to fill the gap in the theorisation process concerning such enterprises. What we need now is a framework that allows local agency to be taken seriously, while at the same time giving due weight to macro-level, structural constraints (Booth, 1993).
