ABSTRACT

Small enterprises in Makassar, like those elsewhere in developing countries, are distinguished by their distinctive combination of internal dynamics and organisational features. These aspects are explored in this chapter while we also gain an initial understanding of their interactions with other enterprises and actors, analysed more fully in Chapter 6. For both of these chapters we adopt the small enterprise integrative framework outlined in Chapter 3. By doing so, we are able to determine whether or not the enterprises were exhibiting features of growth and ‘success’, as emic, locally defined objectives, or whether ‘survivalism’ was closer to their reality.
